Task 2: Case Study

I will be analysing and researching two scene of different films from different time period both contemporary film and historical film. Using me-en-scene both the context of the scene, and also research the director behind it and the film behind it and reveal my result of which scene is suitable for my final task to re-create a scene.

Breakfast at Tiffany’s Opening Scene

This romanic- comedy film drama  was released in 1961 and it is directed by Blake Edwards. This is a historical and famous film  based on a novel by George Axelrod about a young woman who moved to New York meets a young man who had moved into her apartment however she wanted find a man to merry her. Again a romanic film who is played by Hollywood’s most iconic actress Audrey HepBurn(1929-1993). I chose this scene in particular because this opening is interesting and relaxing, as I analysed the setting of New York as an urban and clean and a deserted area until a yellow Taxi came along. which reveals the 60s to be cleaner and less populated making the area as rich and isolated with no people or trash on floor this scene has. Compare to modern day today to be more populated and more less attractive.

“establishes the genre of romance/drama as we see Audrey looking very glamorous suggesting it is of this genre because the protagonist female often tends to be very beautiful in this genre.”

The character in this scene is wearing black Givenchy an iconic garment  and it  expensive today as a designer brand with the original costing £70,000. This scene reveal the product placement of Givenchy promoting their brand. This is because it is marketing promotion of the garment to promote it. However this give the character’ interest of favour wearing luxury brand and how she is looking in windows of luxury shop of what she likes to buy in my interpretation.

The music of this film playing in the opening scene of this film sync the movement of the character representing an innocent and beautiful character. This film is  composed  by henry Mancini.

The scene uses long shot following the distant of 4th Avenue for the taxi in the opening scene of the movie- showing credits and introduction of the film  showing.

Many shots of the opening scene focus on the main character moving, using long-medium shots. The camera also focus on the shop where the character is at which highlight the character’ interest of what she wants.

Forrest Gump- Run, Forrest, Run!

This film is directed by an American filmmaker robert zemeckis who made an 80 classic film such as like ‘Back to the Future” and also my favourite film that I adore ‘Forrest Gump’ (1994 )and ‘Cast Away'(2000). This film is my second scene of choice for re-creating a scene. This is because I adore the way the film is shot with meaning revealing of strength and courage.

Therefore this reveals the struggles people shouldn’t be facing such as bullying or being trapped into something that you must fight against it. This scene again reveals the transition of Forrest Gump’s fear. This scene is significant to the scene when Forrest Gump keeps on running when he was an adult. As  Gump said “When I got tired, I slept. When I got hungry, I ate. When I had to go the bathroom, I went” It just reveals Gump’s human side of the story which where this run was inspired by

UNIT 12: TASK 2: Research and Analysis in Film Practice

In this essay we shall attempt to research and analyse technological changes in filmmaking from the age of silent cinema to now. We shall look at the differences in the way films have been produced and distributed from cinema to the age of Netflix. The central point of the analysis is whether technological changes has effect content and style of filmmaking.

The word cinema comes in French revealing to be as “Movie Hall”. No one invented cinema, but first Thomas Eddison that invented techology such as being the first person to invent the first lightbulb, but he is known for inventing the “Kinetoscope” that was  made in 1894 having being the first device to create pictures moving. However there is another word for filmakers that creates films and these people are called ‘cinematographer’. This is because people in the 1800 delevoped what calld motion picture to reveal the movement of an images that were recorded by cinematophers to delvoped films.

The Lumière Brothers

These brother became to be known as the pioneers of cinema. These brothers are Auguste Marie Louis Nicolas and Louis Jean who are known French invented for developing the earliest cinema in the 1800. In December 1984 Auguste made an experiment with film and later in the following month the brother made their own device called’Cinématographe’. This device is quite different compare to the  ‘Kinetograph’ which it is invention by Thomas Edison with creating moving pictures motion, however the device that brother created is much advance than the Edison created. This is because Edison’s invention is more faster and quick compare to the brothers created. The frame rate that Edison made moves at a 48 frames per second , as the brother’s invention moves in a slow rate of  speed at 16 per second of each picture is moving. This reveals that film that the brothers invented gives a smooth speed on the motion of the film that had made.

“A three-in-one device that could record, develop and project motion pictures, the Cinématographe would go down in history as the first viable film camera. Using it, the Lumière brothers shot footage of workers at their factory leaving at the end of the day. They showed the resulting film, “La Sortie des ouvriers de l’usine Lumière” (“Workers Leaving the Lumière Factory”) at an industrial meeting in Paris in March 1895; it is considered to be the very first motion picture.”

Technological Changes

The 1800 changed the  advancement of cinema and film with as well with motion picture throughout the year. However as motion came advance with their moving pictures, slient films, sound, and colour.

First Motion Picture

There are many people that made moving picture film using frame by frame to create a moving picture, however a  famous example such as Louis Le Prince which famously made a frame called the  ‘Roundhay Garden Scene’ which was made in 1888 but presented to audiences on the November 1 in 1895 that was introduced to being the first cinema. Prince’s film he made have people from the 1800 walking and socialising. Their clothes were old fashion and high class with women wearing white dresses , and men wearing black suit revealing to be high class and formal.

Secondly there is another moving picture inventor that made the famous horse animation in the 1800. Edward Muybridge an English inventor for creating moving pictures with animals such as the horse, and as well creating other animals come to life in picture. Muybridge’s first motion picture reveals a man riding a horse continuously running fast. It also indicates as a GIF made with moving pictures but continuous and repeated pictures moving on and on.

“This is why most people in photos at the time look like zombie facsimiles of themselves, stiff with rigor mortis. But in the early 1870s, Muybridge invented mechanical shutters, a system that used a trigger and rubber springs to snap two planks shut in front of the lens at one-thousandth of a second.”

The era of silent film came along in the 1900, which around the late 1800 the French inventor made a short motion film revealing factory worker moving and working inside, and this was made in the 1895 as it became a success. Silent films came along with an iconic silent film called’ Metropolis’ made in 1927 which shows a futuristic world people in enslave to do things like working non- stop. I choose this silent film because it was an iconic movie and most expensive to be made. As the budget for this film in the time was £6 million which was expensive in the day. However they are silent films like Charlie Chaplin films to his comedy with flash cards but no voice over- but music playing creates a great silent film.

As we fast forward in time CGI became a

The Scene

I will be conducting a scene of my chose of what will I use for my task 3 for this unit I will be doing.

The scene or the film I will be using and creating is called the ‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s’

UNIT 12: Task 1 Research and Analysis in Film Practice

I will be exploring the history  of films that had been created from the start and today with the development of camera, shots, and practical effects, also iconic scene from history that they practise.

Throughout the years films had been gradually changing from 1800 and the 21st century ,  and since films  practised in the era such as silent and  the golden age of films having to developed technology that is relevant today.

First Camera Invention

Firstly, I will be analysing films from the golden era of film such as the 1800 where film cameras first began developing.

“Louis Le Prince’s camera in 1888 was first, an equal number will say it was William Friese-Greene’s in 1889. Someone’s bound to argue the Chinese invented it earlier.”Steyn,R (2013).

Louise Le Prince is a French inventor for creating the first moving picture recording by using different picture sequences to create a moving picture to life, with single camera operation. He born in Meltz France in 1841, he stayed with his  father who was drafted for the French army as an officer. Louise Le Prince worked on creating the single lens camera in 1888 on the city of Leeds he had worked on. He did most of his time experimenting his work with motion picture which resulted him  creating his first moving scene called the ‘Roundhay Garden’ which was released in 14 October 1888

As I analysed the footage he made the footage moving by  doing a  photographic film with taking single shots of frame lens. Although the footage is seen as fast, it does move quickly as again it shots in frame by frame. The footage shows people walking causally, however they are old fashion as shown in the footage with the men revealing to be a gentlemen as tall and straight walking, as for women in the footage they are more formal likewise the men also.

Colour/Restore Invention

Colour was first invented in 1902 , it was called “Cupid Angling” where it reveals children playing in the 1900. These children were related by an inventor  name Edward Raymond Turner who made the invention of the world first colour to be film, however during his invention it was never successful and today experts found a remarkable discoveries to restore his invention to colour – he never seen the full completion after his death in 1903 with a sudden heart attack. Edward Raymond Turner is an English inventor, he was born in 1873 Clevedon.

This footage are the children of the inventor shown here playing with his children happily together playing with flower. This highlight the inventor as loving his children that he had to film them for a memory footage to remember them. The footage shown as slightly distorted and grimly, as I know it is an early recording of colour from the past, again he recorded his children, but I can interpret that it shows history true colours from the 1800. This is because it revealing to us what fashion is like with their colours in the past revealed what most people dress in what colour people mostly wear in the 1800. This support for historians to back up evidence the lifestyle of what were society like wearing, and I believe reveals the true colours of the past giving me what the message is on the footage is this for a memory or experiment for his invention. I understand colours on the past were new, I can see the footage moving quickly due to different frames per second ,Edward Turner taking of different photograph to quickly make the footage move.

Secondly, colour had been advancing throughout the 1900 likewise again the inventor that made became a narrative with film having a story with colour. This film is called The Wizard Of Oz which was released in 1939, and the opening of the film location Kansa as black and white- this show the depression and weakness ‘telling us that our imagination is more real than the real world’. This gives a message for the director about the film symbolism as fantasy shown in the other world of setting the mood and narrative for the main character to experience the adventure of Oz.

This film I will analysed was released recently in 2018 winning the BAFTAS for being awarded as a best documentary film that made. This film is directed by Peter Jackson , and the footage in this films  are clips of archive footage filmed in black and white those  were the  surviving footage that were recorded by “1960s and 70s by the BBC and the Imperial War Museum”. The footage we view here are edited with a beautiful HD footage of colour revealing the past, however it not just the coloured being improved but the sound is used in throughout the film- slowing down the motion in the film moving. This is work by “sharpen the images and make them look crispy”. Peter Jackson called this technique called” Charlie Chaplin effect”. In which Peter Jackson made using advance editing software by rending the footage into 3D with the sound and the colour throughout the footage.

Overall, these technology that made a big impact in films from the recording and the transfer of black and white into colour made an incredible discovery for film to use which i find it important for these invention made in order to create something that would be an relevant use today. I chose those  two invention because I never knew who made the invention of colour because there are different people that made colour invention, I had thought that the Wizard Of Oz made the first colour film, however it was someone in the 1800 which made fascinated about the mystery behind it.

Personal Statement

From interviewing stars on the red carpet to becoming a creator of my own short films, my interest and passion for media has been apparent from a young age. It is for this reason that I wish to continue studying the subject in higher education since it will help me develop.

My main influence thus far has been Sam Kodler, a travel blogger/filmmaker, who creates aesthetically pleasing artistic visuals with his films. I’ve subsequently come to understand that film can be used in an artistic way and advertise an event and / or product. It is this angle I wish to pursue and therefore wish to mix my passion for media with the pursuit of advertising.

Currently I am studying Level 3 Creative Media Production and Technology. On this course I have gained valuable skills such as teamwork, editing and communication skills when conveying ideas. Uniquely, media has different factors that could benefit me for my CV, as it as assists knowledge and skills for working in media, such as working to a brief for clients to produce. This has allowed me to gain skills such as editing, knowledge of shot types, and creating engaging and appealing narratives. On the course I have had the opportunity to work on various projects.

All the modules involve career related work such as team working with colleagues and improving communication. The team building exercises in the pre-production stage for example, really helped me gain an insight on how important this discipline is for the successful production; whether it involves multi or single camera production. My final major project involved producing a Netflix series for which my group produced a short pilot for a thriller. This resulted in me gaining a lot skills related to film production from camera work to cinematography, and I feel ready to learn more.

I am not only seeking to further my understand of skills of course, but also media theories, and how media works in an advertising sense. In many ways, pitching potential project proposals has highlighted to me the importance of not only preparation, but also marketing. It is this that has made advertising an appealing option as a potential career path.

During my secondary school I had a work experience in a children’s book store called “Tales on New Lane Moon”. I had been tasked to stock books and tagging prices in every product the assistant manager had given me and delivering books to the post office. This gave me confidence working with my peers in the workplace, and, more importantly, supported me to work as part of a team.

In addition, as part of the college programme I have undertaken work experience in a store called “Fara Charity”. Working there enabled me to develop customer service skills and also how charities advertise themselves to gather interest and finance. This is particularly fascinating to me. This experience not only helped me to improve my confidence in dealing with customers, but it also opened my eyes to the marketing aspect of charities and how they operate in a media sense.

During my spare time I create videos such as travel videos and marketing my business both on Instagram and YouTube. Currently, I am managing my business which is called “RoiVintageClothing” in which I collect and sell second hand vintages clothes such as Champion, Nike, Adidas.  As a result, I am selling them on the market on Depop as well promoting it on Instagram. I have been working with female models to promote the business brand, using them as influencers and being in charge of the advertising materials.

In conclusion, I am looking forward to studying the course to the best of my ability with researching and discovering exciting content, which will gain value to my CV for my path to become a social media promoter.
